Ability Sports Africa: Changing the Game in Northern Uganda - One Inclusive Match at a Time

In Gulu, the field is no longer just a place to play - it’s a place where leadership is reclaimed, stigma is challenged, and community is rewritten. Ability Sports Africa is doing something rare and powerful: it’s not asking to be included. It’s creating spaces where children and youth with disabilities lead the way.
Founded in 2019, Ability Sports Africa was born to confront a harsh reality: children with disabilities in Northern Uganda are often excluded from school sports, community activities, and even basic social participation. The result is not just isolation - it’s a whole generation being told they don’t belong. But Ability Sports Africa has turned that narrative on its head.
What they do
Ability Sports Africa uses adaptive sports, physical literacy, and creative arts to build confidence, life skills, and agency. They work in schools and communities across Gulu, Nwoya, and Amuru districts, using sports leagues, festivals, and events to create a culture of belonging. Their programs also include inclusive education support, health and menstrual hygiene initiatives, and teacher and coach training - so inclusion becomes sustainable, not temporary.

Milestones worth celebrating
Since 2019, Ability Sports Africa has trained 180 teachers and coaches, partnered with 26 primary schools, and engaged over 560 children and youth with disabilities alongside 2,000+ children without disabilities. Their athletes have even represented Uganda in national and international para-sport competitions - a powerful reminder that talent is everywhere when barriers are removed.
Why it matters
Ability Sports Africa is not doing charity. They are building a culture shift. When children with disabilities lead, the whole community learns to see ability differently. When teachers are trained, schools become safe spaces. When families witness inclusive festivals and leagues, stigma begins to fade.
This is Renewing Community in action - creating a redemptive space that models unity, purpose, and belonging.

The road ahead
Ability Sports Africa’s vision is bold and local-led. They are prioritizing physiotherapy outreach, expanding adaptive sports in schools, and strengthening community football through grassroots leagues and inclusive races. With the right partnerships and support for equipment, mobility, and capacity building, the organization is ready to scale to new regions.
Their message is clear: inclusion is not an add-on. It is the foundation of a thriving community.
This is only the beginning. Follow along and see where it leads.
