Backup Uganda: Making Education Work for Every Learner

In Northern Uganda, many children are still pushed aside by a system that doesn’t understand them  -  not because they lack potential, but because the world around them doesn’t know how they learn. Backup Uganda exists to change that reality.

Founded in Gulu, Backup Uganda is a force for inclusion, championing learners with learning difficulties and disabilities who have too often been misunderstood, labeled, or excluded.

This organization isn’t simply offering support  -  it’s changing mindsets.

A Gap That Needed Filling

Backup Uganda was created in response to a harsh reality:

  • Many learners are misdiagnosed or ignored

  • Teachers lack training to identify learning differences

  • Schools often exclude children labeled as “incapable”

  • Parents and communities lack awareness of how learning works differently

Backup Uganda tackles these challenges head-on by equipping schools, teachers, and families with the knowledge and tools needed to support every child.

Training, Awareness, and Lasting Change

Through awareness campaigns, capacity-building, and advocacy, Backup Uganda empowers:

  • Teachers

  • School leaders

  • Parents and caregivers

  • Education professionals

They provide practical tools for early identification and inclusive teaching practices  -  shifting classrooms from exclusion to belonging.

What Their Work Looks Like on the Ground

Backup Uganda doesn’t just talk about inclusion  -  they build it.

By training teachers and educating communities, they create classrooms where learners are seen, understood, and supported. Children who were once turned away are now given space to thrive.

And the impact is growing.

Milestones That Matter

Backup Uganda’s work is already reshaping education across Northern Uganda:

  • 348 established teachers trained

  • 510 student teachers trained

  • 32 teacher educators trained

  • More than 8,000 parents and community members reached

  • Partnerships with 18 primary schools, 2 primary teacher colleges, and 20 organizations

  • More than 69,100 learners impacted

These numbers represent more than statistics  -  they represent children who are now included, valued, and given the chance to succeed.

The Road Ahead

Looking forward, Backup Uganda is preparing to expand and deepen its impact through new projects and stronger partnerships.

Their long-term vision is simple but profound:

An inclusive education system where every learner is understood, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential.

Backup Uganda is not just changing classrooms  -  they are changing futures.

Momentum is building. Stay connected to it.
