In Gulu, where many young people carry the weight of trauma, Kalokelo Studios is proving that healing can be found through creativity - not as a luxury, but as a lifeline.

Founded in 2015 by artist Brian Okello, Kalokelo Studios was born from lived experience. Brian’s journey through trauma and substance abuse didn’t end in silence - it became a story of recovery, transformation, and creative rebirth. He built the studio to be a safe space where young people can process pain, rebuild confidence, and rediscover hope through art.
What They’re Solving
Kalokelo Studios responds to challenges that remain largely unspoken:
trauma from conflict and displacement
substance abuse and addiction
social stigma around mental health
lack of safe spaces for expression
limited access to healing resources
Instead of waiting for external systems to respond, Kalokelo creates spaces where healing begins within the community itself.

Healing Through Creative Practice
Kalokelo uses art therapy approaches that include:
drawing and painting
storytelling and theatre
dance and creative games
public exhibitions and murals
These activities build emotional resilience, self-awareness, and positive coping skills - helping young people rebuild identity and dignity.
Milestones That Show the Power of Art
Kalokelo Studios has made a lasting mark across Gulu through:
programs at Gulu Remand Home and St. Jude Children’s Home
community awareness campaigns
public exhibitions and murals that reduce stigma
a 2025 training program for former drug users using creative arts for rehabilitation and reintegration
These milestones show that art isn’t just expression - it’s transformation.
The Road Ahead
Kalokelo Studios is expanding its work into new spaces and communities, including:
psychiatric wards and hospitals
workplace wellness art programs
youth talent searches
artistic campaigns against substance abuse
Their long-term vision is a community where healing is accessible, stigma is reduced, and young people can shape their futures one stroke at a time.
Kalokelo Studios isn’t just creating art - it’s building a new story of recovery, strength, and possibility.
