VISO: From Conflict Recovery to Community Transformation

In the wake of the Lord’s Resistance Army conflict, Northern Uganda faced not just physical rebuilding - but a deep need for peace, leadership, and sustainable recovery. Voluntary Initiative Support Organisation (VISO) was born in 2005 from the belief that communities can rebuild themselves when given support, resources, and a shared vision. What started as a volunteer-led response has grown into a long-term development organization shaping lives across the Acholi subregion.

What VISO Is Tackling

After years of conflict, communities continue to face challenges like youth unemployment, weakened social cohesion, and limited access to education and livelihoods. VISO steps in by addressing these root causes through community-led programs that build resilience, peace, and economic stability.

What They’re Doing Today

VISO delivers integrated programming across:

  • Economic empowerment through agriculture, entrepreneurship, and savings groups

  • Peacebuilding through community dialogue and youth engagement

  • Education support through Speed Schools and capacity building

  • Climate resilience and sustainable farming initiatives

Their work is grounded in local leadership, volunteerism, and long-term commitment.

Milestones That Matter

VISO’s impact is built on scale and consistency:

  • 4,750+ farmer groups supported

  • 250 communities reached

  • 3,750+ individuals supported through agribusiness

  • 1,150+ learners enrolled in Speed Schools

  • 179 peace clubs established

  • 45 community members trained in animal–human protection

These achievements show VISO’s ability to build systems - not just deliver programs.

Why VISO’s Work Is Critical

VISO is filling a gap that remains decades after conflict ended: long-term stability. Their model focuses on building leadership and economic opportunity so communities can thrive independently. Their work strengthens local capacity, restores dignity, and creates a future where young people are empowered rather than displaced by circumstance.

The Road Ahead

VISO is continuing to grow and expand, seeking partners to support:

  • climate-smart agriculture and food processing

  • water, sanitation, and hygiene access

  • expanded youth-focused social enterprise

  • more peacebuilding and community leadership training

Their long-term vision is clear: a peaceful, productive Northern Uganda where livelihoods are diverse, sustainable, and community-driven.

Follow along with their work and watch what’s unfolding in real time.
